Raising Your Profile Without Shouting
One of the common threads in career transitions—especially for those moving into a new field, stepping up to a bigger role, or exploring a portfolio career—is the need to raise your profile. But if the thought of self-promotion makes you uncomfortable, you’re not alone.
Many of the people we coach are deeply experienced, thoughtful professionals who want their work to speak for itself. They’re not looking to dominate the conversation or chase the spotlight. And yet, they recognise that if no one knows what they bring, opportunities can pass them by.
So how do you raise your profile in a way that feels natural—not showy, not salesy, but still effective?
Start with clarity
Get clear on what you want to be known for. What are the themes, strengths or perspectives you want others to associate with you? This helps you speak about your work with focus and confidence—without needing to oversell.
Share value, not just achievements
Instead of simply listing what you’ve done, try sharing what you’ve learned. A short LinkedIn post, a thoughtful comment, or a quiet conversation with a colleague can all signal expertise without self-promotion.
Be visible where it matters
You don’t need to be everywhere. Focus your energy on spaces and relationships that align with your goals—whether that’s reconnecting with past colleagues, joining a professional group, or contributing to a piece of work that gets seen by the right people.
Raising your profile doesn’t mean becoming someone you’re not. It’s about showing up more fully as the professional you already are—and helping others to see it, too.
