Some highlights ahead of the launch of our new report

Next week we are launching our report into law careers in 2017.  Our in-depth survey has heard from over 300 lawyers based throughout the UK and asked them about their experiences at different stages in their careers. It has looked at their career needs, aspirations and expectations.

Results were mixed with some consistently positive reports from lawyers particularly around support for career and professional development, well-being and support. Areas of concern included job satisfaction among non-partners, perceived recognition and value, and understanding of the firm's strategic direction.

Ahead of the full report, here is a preview of some of the findings.

  • Job satisfaction: 75% of partners report being "extremely" or "comfortably" satisfied and fulfilled in the role
  • Just 14% of non-partners described themselves as being "extremely" satisfied and fulfilled. Just over one in ten were either "not at all" or "poorly" satisfied and fulfilled.
  • 86% considered that their firm was supportive of their well-being. However,
  • Of the few (15%) reporting frequent experiences of negative stress, most (59%) reported not receiving the support they needed from their firm.
50% of those describing their role as "not challenging" planned to leave their firm within one year.

87% of those describing their role as "challenging" planned to stay with their firm for 10+ years
50% of women lawyers do not feel valued by their firm
The report looks at what is working and what is not working in the areas of career satisfaction and fulfilment, stress and well-being, professional development, job structures and flexible working and provides analysis of reports by age, grade and gender.
