3 Key Promotion Tips

For many of us as we start a new year, our attention returns (perhaps reluctantly!) to work and careers. Whether you are job seeking, looking for that next contract or generally trying to find the next piece of work for your business, you are engaged in marketing. Whilst we are usually comfortable with that in the business context, many job seekers are uncomfortable with this idea and many, as a result, fall back on ‘passive’ job searching approaches (for example, relying solely on recruitment agencies, job websites and newspaper ads).

For the last few years I have been suggesting to my job seeking clients that they adopt a marketing mindset and approach that is akin to the one we use when promoting Managing Change:

FIRST - OFTEN - WELL
  • In other words, when people are looking for coaching and outplacement support, I want them to think of us FIRST – that is, we are the first port of call.
  • I want them to be reminded of us OFTEN in the coaching and outplacement context
  • When they do think of us, I want that to be WELL, that is favourably and positively

This shapes our marketing messages, both in terms of content and activity. In the same way, consider how effective it would be for recruiters and prospective employers to think of you first, often and well when they have an assignment or job need…

What could you do differently or in addition to your current approach to achieve that effect?

What will you do? When will you do it?
